Politico: In Archie: Obama vs Palin

In Archie: Obama vs Palin

It was revealed earlier this month that Archie Comics had put President Barack Obama and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on the cover of 'Archie' issues #616 and #617. On the first cover we peeked, the two pols are featured looking downright friendly: Obama and Palin share a milkshake, prompting Archie to declare, "Wow, I guess *anything's* possible!" Inside, Obama and Palin get involved with Riverdale High's student government election, in which Archie is running against Reggie.

But, lest you think the comic book is all mush, POLITICO has learned that the company is set to announce two covers on a less bi-partisan theme: Palin and Obama fighting it out.

Archie Comics will announce on Tuesday variant covers on the Obama-Palin theme, with one cover showing Obama poised to clash with Palin in midair, while another — labeled "The Fight for America!" — depicting Obama and Palin sporting boxing gloves, prepped to spar with one other. Obama is dubbed "The Chicago Kid" while Palin gets named "The Thrilla from Wasilla."

Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater told POLITICO that the company had received so much positive feedback on the first Obama/Palin cover (which made the rounds last week) they decided, why ruin a good thing?

"We sat around and talked and said, 'Holy toledo!' This is something that we should take a look at and bring the president back on the cover for." (He said he just reached out to both the Palin and Obama camps and predicted that "I'm sure that we're going to hear from them" about their comics).

"At the end of the day, President Obama and Sarah Palin completely come from opposite sides, but they both want the same thing: The best interests of the United States. And we figured Riverdale High School was a place they can unite," he said.

Of course, there's a subtle statement being made here by Archie Comics: Sarah Palin is the apparent GOP leader. Why else choose her to counter Obama?

"From my view point, she does represent the Republican Party right now," said Goldwater. "She's out front and center and there is no other dynamic candidate that we can see here at Archie that basically represents the Republican Party. ... No one else occurred to us, actually."

Aug 10, 2010. Tuesday: Politico: Huckabee backs Palin's Senate pick

Huckabee backs Palin's Senate pick

Mike Huckabee ventured onto Sarah Palin’s home turf Monday by backing her preferred Senate candidate in her native Alaska.

It’s fairly uncommon territory for Huckabee and Palin, who often endorse opposing candidates in GOP primaries. Nonetheless, the former Arkansas governor announced Monday that he’s also backing Republican attorney Joe Miller, who is waging an uphill campaign to defeat Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Aug. 24 GOP primary.

“A former State Magistrate and Federal Judge, Joe possesses a deep understanding of the law, but more importantly understands its impact on the people,” said Huckabee in a statement. “It is clear that Joe Miller has the right kind of experience, expertise and values to make a great Senator.”

Huckabee’s endorsement comes the same time that he and Palin are campaigning for dueling candidates in the GOP run-off in Georgia. Palin is backing former Secretary of State Karen Handel, while Huckabee has endorsed former Rep. Nathan Deal in the Aug. 10 contest.

In addition to Georgia, Palin and Huckabee backed opposing candidates in GOP primaries in the California Senate race and the Iowa gubernatorial contest.

But in the Alaska Senate race, Palin has not only endorsed Miller, her family has also taken a special interest in the race. Her husband, Todd Palin, has headlined a couple events for Miller.

Palin announced in early June that she supported Miller, after having previously supported Murkowski. She announced early in the cycle that she was backing the senator and even cut a check to Murkowski’s campaign, but later changed course and endorsed Miller, proclaiming “competition's good” in her endorsement of him on her Facebook page.

Unlike some of the other candidates whom either Palin or Huckabee has endorsed, public polls show Miller is a long-shot to unseat Murkowski. In an Ivan Moore Research poll taken in mid-July, Murkowski lead Miller, 62 percent to 30 percent.

August 5, 2010, Thursday: Politico - Obama in over his head

Sarah Palin: President Obama 'in over his head'

Former Alaska GOP Gov. Sarah Palin declared Wednesday night that President Barack Obama has proved to be “in over his head.”

Though Palin did not fully articulate when the president has demonstrated that he has not been able to handle the job, the former Alaska governor asserted during an interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity that Obama was not up to the job.

“I think he’s quite complacent, and I think he’s in over his head, and he has poor advisers around him. And I think he’s really in flux when it comes to what his governing philosophy really is,” she said.

“Some of this, though, is a result of him not having much experience,” added Palin, who left the governor’s office halfway through her first term.

Palin blamed a “complicit media” and voters who did not demand that Obama be fully “vetted” during the presidential campaign.

Palin pointed to the immigration issue as an example of where Obama has dropped the ball.

“It’s a travesty with what is going on with the immigration issues in this country,” she said. “He has a choice in defending we the people in this nation of laws, and you can see where he is headed.”

Palin also sought to provide “context” to her comment over the weekend that Obama lacked the “cojones” that Palin said Arizona GOP Gov. Jan Brewer has displayed on immigration.

“The governor is doing the right thing, and the president lacks the guts to do anything about it,” she said.
